This year marks the ninth year the Johnson City News & Neighbor has been serving the Johnson City area. The two-time General Excellence award winning community newspaper started publishing April 12, 1998.
“We are very proud of our accomplishments in the community. With the day to day grind of work it ’s easy to miss the joy of what your company has accomplished. On the occasion of our anniversary we are tooting our horn a little. Very, very few newspapers like ours start publishing. Even fewer survive in the first few years, ” said Bill and Judy Derby, publishers.
“As a community paper grows and becomes more and more a part of the lives of our readers, the paper actually becomes “their” newspaper. That’s what a good community newspaper is supposed to do. From the first day we started publishing the newspaper, we decided not to print bad or controversial news. We leave that to the daily or electronic media. People get depressed reading and hearing negative news. We wanted to showcase our wonderful community and especially the people in it with positive news that leaves a good feeling. We also want to put our community's best foot forward for new businesses and people moving here, ” the publishers added.
The News & Neighbor just received its fourth circulation report and readership survey from the Circulation Verification Council (CVC) showing a 99.1% market receivership with a regular increase in readership and growth.
“Each year we have increased revenue and readership, the most vital benchmarks of success in this industry. It shows people enjoy reading our paper and that our customers are successful in marketing their products and services in their advertising, ” Derby said.
“We have a great staff. They work very hard for their customers and love to share the success stories and great things they hear in the community about our paper. Our graphic artists have won numerous awards for their creative work. It ’s a team effort and we are proud of their ability and dedication to excellence,” said Judy Derby. “Beverly Green, our executive editor, does double duty as an advertising sales person and is also a veteran news person. She loves both. ”
Bill Derby, a 30 year newspaper veteran said, “We have many new and exciting plans for the coming year. We recently added Roy Jenkins as our circulation manager. He brings over nine years of newspaper circulation experience to our company. He is now converting some of our postal route delivery to private carrier delivery due to new changes and increases in the U.S. Postal rates coming May 14. We also plan to expand our distribution programs to add valuable circulation and readers for our advertising customers. And we will always be a free newspaper for our readers. ”
"Our other staff members include Leslie Haas, Sharon Clark, Jeff Derby and Jamie Bailey in sales and marketing. Judd Shaw is our Production Manager and graphic artist. Sherri G Pugh is our graphic artist and web designer."
Derby added, "We have also just expanded our website at www.newsandneighboronline.com so out of town readers can read stories about their friends and family back home."
"Local Faces...Local Places" is the Johnson City News & Neighbor's motto. Our award winning local news
